Family Ties

YAY!! I had a great weekend! My mom and little bro Marcus came up from SoCal to visit Derek and I. It had been 4 months since I had seen my mom and 7 months since I had seen my brother. Although, we keep in contact through phone calls and text messaging often, it's still way too long to go with out the physical interaction, ya know. So Thursday night I picked them up from SJC and we came back to our place and laid low for the rest of the night. I slaved over the cutting board and put together a great big 'ol salad for dinner, (hahaha)which we all thoroughly enjoyed, along with catching up conversations and a couple of glasses of wine! (a n/a sparkler for my 12 year old brother)
The next day, Friday morning, after my jog at the neighborhood HS track, I came home and picked up them up and we headed out for the day. We went and had coffee and shopped around on good 'ol Lincoln Ave. They hadn't been in awhile so it was like old times:) At around noon, we realized that the Farmer's Market was going on in downtown San Jose. It was actually the first time any of us had been, believe it or not, and we really enjoyed it! There's a little bit of everything there, in just the span of a block and a half, maybe two. Short and sweet:) If you are there and get a chance, I really recommend stopping by the Crepe table. We shared their Chicken and Mushroom crepe....chicken, mushrooms, spinach, feta cheese, bell peppers=YUM!
After our fill of the Market, we headed over to the Almaden Valley Nursery to find some plants to re-pot for the front of my door at home. I had been waiting for the right time to get out there and bring new life to the entrance of my place again. It has been a couple of years since the last time I had planted anything and that means it was way too long. I thought it would be something that the three of us could enjoy together. A way for us to spend quality time together and make something pretty at the same time!
With sooo many choices and help from the "plant guy"Dave at the nursery, we came home with 5 beautiful flowering plants and 1 beautiful flowering small tree! That evening my mom and I dug our hands in the dirt, (btw, we both agree that we LOVE the smell of fresh soil) and re-potted all 6 plants and arranged them on my porch. I absolutely love them and we both really enjoyed ourselves.

Meanwhile, our boys (Derek and Marcus) went to grab take-out for all of us and we all had a nice dinner! Along with more conversation, laughs, and reminiscing moments:) Nothing like a little moment with mother nature to work up an good appetite for all of the above!!
Saturday morning came early once again from the late night before, but wanting to stay true to form, I awoke nice and early-er to get a workout in before we started our long day. We had a Trunk Show to attend to in Los Gatos as well as a family reunion in Gilroy. The Trunk Show was a feature and sale of the arts and crafts of the Etsy/Sf group. One of my dearest friends Miranda is apart of this creative clan and she was there to sell her beautiful Hair Petals and delectable cupcakes (MiraCakes)as well as feature her mother's classically chic handmade stationary. We were all glad we were able to attend on our way out, and we're glad to have met some new creative ladies who inspired me to channel my own creative lady;)
Then it was off to Gilroy him, nor did I ever really meet anyone on that side of the family. My immediate family come from Southern California, but all of my mom's family (including her)were born and raised right here in San Jose... and there is a grip of them! Not everyone was able to make it that day but I was told that something like 400 some people were invited....WOW! I'd say though that about to meet everyone at our family reunion. After fighting traffic, making a few pit stops, and finally finding the park location, we arrived. We were first greeted by my Uncle Albert who is my mom's oldest brother and organizer of this get together. Mind you this was a union of the Robles family, which is my grandfather side, and of whom I never even really knew. He passed away when I was in the 1st grade so I never had any kind of relationship with half of that were there over the course of the day. My group were probably some of the last to show up (if not the last) but we were able to still enjoy food, meet lots of new faces and catching up with old ones...well you know what I mean, right? ;) The only bummer about there being such a big group was that it seemed that people were a little overwhelmed. So there wasn't a whole lot of intermingling with the ones that didn't know each other. Most people stuck next to their own immediate families and/or the ones that they knew best. I guess I kinda did too...Oh well!~
The day ended back at home with left over BBQ for dinner and lots of cold stuff to drink. It sure was a hot one:)
The next morning we got up early once again to tackle yet another long hot day in Gilroy. This time though we were headed to the Gilroy Garlic Festival. It was the first visit for the three of us, Derek, myself and my family, but we were meeting up with some alumni's there. Derek's two sister's and their family go every year. So we get to Gilroy and almost at the very front of the freeway exit you are being directed to drive in a single file line to the parking area. Once you park, you get out of your car and get into another line to get on a shuttle bus to the park itself. The busses were nice though, air conditioned and TV monitors getting you informed as to the festival criteria, where to go, food to expect, etc. Once in the park, it's a free for all.
We ultimately had a good time, however, for any first timers next year...I would suggest to prepare yourselves for lots of sun, long lines and lots of fried food. The garlic artichoke hearts, garlicy calamari, garlic fries all YUMMY! We spent alot of time in the wine tent, where you can do tastings from 8-10 local wineries. The cherry on the sundae there was that the tent was filled with water misters, thank god:)

The weekend came and went so fast, unfortunately, and we had to drop my mom and brother off at the airport for their return home:( But I couldn't have asked for a better visit....I'm already planning for the next one:)

I Accept the Challenge!

One life long goal that I've had is to participate in a marathon of some sort. To be honest it was one of those things though that I had verbally put out there, but always thought in the back of my mind that it wouldn't happen anytime soon. Always on the back burner. Wasn't very confident I would have the time to train, or would be able to get myself to performance level, in fact I don't think I even know what that means. What I do know, however, is that it would be an awesome accomplishment! One day....
Another life long goal of mine would be to be able to use my free time to volunteer and/or give back in some way. Get involved in community based work, non profit organizations, etc. Again, one day....
Well these days, I've been thinking about it a lot more. Considering where I'm at with my health situation, having extra time because I'm not working, and physically in fairly good shape, what is stopping me now?
After talking to a friend about wanting to attend an informational meeting for the American Cancer Society, she told me about a meeting that her sister was involved in for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society that very night. I took down the information and decided to go and check it out. I found out all about one of their annual fundraising campaigns, Team In Training. The Society's Team In Training (TNT) is the world’s largest endurance sports training program, providing coaching and support for people to cross the finish line at marathons, half marathons, triathlons and 100-mile cycling events. Over 360,000 participants have raised more than $850 million for lifesaving cancer research and to help blood cancer patients live longer, better lives.
So there it was, I had to do it. I joined Team in Training!! I signed up to train for a half marathon run in October!! Yep, that's right October...as in 2.5 months, a half marathon....as in 13.1 miles, run...as in I'm gonna attempt to run the entire thing....Yikes;) Well with all of that aside, this truly is a great organization. Not only will I be able to get into the best physical shape that I've ever been in, but I will be achieving a couple of life long goals of mine!! It's a win, win, win if you ask me:) Stay tuned for more info on how I'm getting involved and how you may be able to support the cause as well:)

Medical Update

So I was soo excited to be going to my follow-up appointment today. It had been a sort of finalization that I was longing for. I was excited about the news that I had gotten a few days before so this meeting was just to hear the good news in person and to hear what my options were at this point.
So Derek and I headed up to the city casually around 1pm. We got to UCSF pretty quickly and actually got in to see my doctor within 15 mins. That's what I call service!! hahaa
So with a look of relief on my doctor's face, he reiterated the happy news that I had gotten over the phone a few days before. That since the last scan back in April, the spot on my liver essentially hasn't changed, No growth, No spreading!! THANK GOD!! So, staying true to form, this is what I'd like to focus on in making the next decision in all this. Yes, more decisions to make regarding what to do now....

So the options are:
*simply leaving it alone and going back every 2 months for the next 6 months to vigilantly monitor this "spot"
*start a chemo treatment
*have the open surgery

He told me that there really isn't a wrong answer, just what I am willing to put myself through. What's my philosophy. (hmmm, sounds kinda deep huh?) Each option has it's uncertainties and/or side effects. For example, chemotherapy in my situation (a stage 2 colon cancer) would only increase the chance of curing it by 2%, so would I be willing to put myself through the potential side effects for such a small increase? The open surgery would physically remove the spot and surrounding tissue and we could test it to see what this spot is, however, remembering the fact that now in 3 months this "spot" has essentially stayed the same, it looks like most likely it is nothing. Do I then want to endure the potential risks that can occur from open surgery for what looks like nothing?

So I have finally come to the conclusion that the best thing for me right now is to just rescan in 2 months and see where I am at at that point. I figure that if in 2 more months this spot hasn't changed than I can feel confident that it isn't a tumor or anything serious. Of course I would continue to rescan regularly and continue to go from there.
So there it is...Wshhhooo...I am sure glad to come to that finality at least:) I guess I'm realizing that there is really never a guaranty with these things so I just have to have faith that I am strong enough to take it one step at a time. I physically feel great so I want to focus on that and continue on with life :) Sound good??

My Brand New Bike~

This weekend as Derek and I were out and about killing time while his car was getting it regularly scheduled service, we started exploring bicycle shops in the neighborhood. I have been on the hunt for a bike this year and hadn't quite found the ONE yet. Didn't think this day would be any different, so I was assuming I would be window shopping as usual. However, after being in and out of 5 different shops that day, I was determined to find the ONE. And so low and behold, I was in Hyland Family Bicycles here on Meridian Avenue in Willow Glen. Literally across the street from my home, I found my bike!! It's PERRRTY! My Hunny bought me the bike and yes a helmet, and I couldn't be happier:) I couldn't wait any longer to ride it so I called up my girl Nicole the next day and told her to throw her bike in the car and head over to my place. We hit the Los Gatos/Vasona Park Trail on our bikes and got about a 14 miles ride round trip:) Love it!!

Medical Update

Oh thank you god! That's all that I can say. Yesterday, I went to the imaging department @ UCSF and took the scan that I needed to take which was a PET/CT. I came home with the disappointing assumption that I wouldn't be getting the results back for another day or so. But to my surprise, Tom, the oncology nurse called me with the results that night! He informed me that the test came back with great news...that the spot on my liver appeared to be essentially the same size and that there was no evidence of spreading!! Oh HOLY NIGHT!! That's all that I can say:) It was such a relief to have a response so quickly but to get such great news... that was the icing on the cake, the star on the tree, the bedazzled jewel on my hair petal, etc....;) Tom also informed me that we were to come in and meet with my Dr. on Monday to discuss the details in person. Gladly!!

"The Police" in concert

This last Monday, July 14th Derek and I headed over to Shoreline Amphitheater to see an all time favorite in concert, The Police!! I personally have wanted to see them for awhile now and when they came to Oakland last year for their reunion, I missed it! But this time I wasn't gonna let that happen, hahaha! Although it was last minute planning, we bought tickets. So that night we headed over to our favorite taqueria in Mountain View(Taqueria La Bamba), grabbed a couple of super burritos and headed to the lawn at Shoreline. The entire place filled up, and by the time the sun went down, we could no longer see the the stage from where we stood. We pretty much were relying on the jumbo screens, and our ears of course, to thoroughly enjoy the show. I have to say Sting has a completely timeless, acoustical voice! His band have always been just as fantastic and that night was no exception. They performed most of their classics except for one that we were both hoping for, Synchronicity 2 ....bummer! Nonetheless, we had a great time..."thanks Hunny;)"

Anxious Awakening

Ok, so it's late and I am, as usual, up late getting ready for tomorrow's scan appointment at UCSF. This day couldn't have come fast enough, I've been oddly excited to go and get this done. It's been just a few days short of 1 month since I've been waiting to get approval for this appointment. And now it's later this morning and now I know I can't sleep....
I feel like I'm taking a final exam tomorrow morning, first period, and I'm not sure that I studied enough. Hahaha. Weird, I know, but my mind is spinning and even of stupid thoughts like of the drive there and finding the location and getting parking, and then of physically taking the scan and waiting for the results...and waiting for the results....and waiting for the results...
I guess that's the nerve racking part. I really want this to go well...guess it's the over-achiever in me (insert "Hahaha" here).

Medical Update

Hey everyone!!
Well I am soo releaved to say I finally have approval for the scan that I need to take at UCSF. I got a phone call this morning from the scheduling department and was given an appointment for next Wednesday, July 16th at 9:30 am. Aaaaahhhh!! Thank GOD!! I'm sure I've shared with most of you how anxious I've felt waiting for these approvals with insurance, and although I was able to physically be patient and wait, emotionally I was holding on by a thread...ugh!!
But now, I look forward to next week and will keep you posted on the results:) Have a fabulous day!
Ps...Thanks for all your support!

Weekend in San Mateo

This last weekend Derek and I house sat for my Aunt who has a condo in San Mateo. We had a great time!!! Thoroughly enjoyed the fact that her place was one block away from Central Park too. Each morning I would get up, throw on my Ipod and tennies and run to and inside this wonderful park. At the entrance, there was an Arboretum and a small rose garden, and right behind that the park opened to a large grassy area that was surrounded by trees and benches. Along the outer part of the park was picnic areas, a playground, a small kiddie train, and a Japanese garden. It is also a dog friendly park so there were numerous puppies and their proud owners everyday. On Saturday after a nice run, I met a man that was out walking his two dogs; a papa Rottweiler and his boy pup. Tooo Cuuute!(the puppy, not the man) His name was Drako and I fell in love with him:)
Through out the weekend we also discovered the fabulous Drager's and didn't want to leave. It's like Whole Foods to the 10th power. Quality, that's all I can say!!
Most importantly, the weekend was about enjoying each other and the simple things in life:) I think we found a place that we can consider relocating to if the opportunity was there. It's as far north and up the peninsula as we would go, we
both agree.
I know you're thinking, "San Mateo?" but actually it's quite a nice area. The neighborhoods are filled with tree lined streets, alot of quaint homes, and central to all the major necessities like the freeways, the never ending El Camino, shops, stores. etc...the weather is pretty close to the south bay but just a little breezier:) You never know....;)
